What “overdue” means
Every vehicle has a date by which it must pass its next roadworthiness test. If the test takes place after that date, it counts as late and the law adds a surcharge to the normal cost. Not sure when yours is due? Use our deadline calculator.
What the delay costs
The surcharge increases the longer you wait. For passenger cars the amounts are:

The real risk: the €400 fine
The surcharge at the test centre is the smallest cost. Driving without a valid roadworthiness test is an offence, and according to Greek press reports from August 2026 the fine is €400.
On top of that, the Greek state is preparing an electronic cross-check: digital systems compare the date each vehicle was due for its KTEO with the inspection certificates actually issued. This means a fine can arrive without you ever being stopped by the police. Implementation details are announced by the authorities — but the message is clear: do not leave it.

How to make sure it never happens again
The test can be done up to 3 weeks before the due date without losing any days of validity. So if it suits you to come a little early, it costs you nothing.
